Bessie “Bess” Blazevich passed away peacefully early Friday morning at
Providence Place, Drums.
The daughter of the late Nicholas and Victoria Grovich, Bess was born in
Yugoslavia in 1926, and immigrated to the United States a year later. The
oldest of eleven children, Bess and her sisters were raised in West
Hazleton.
A 1943 graduate of West Hazleton High School, Bess married Alex
Blazevich in 1947. After marrying, they lived in Lehighton were they owned
and operated Lehigh Valley Bakery. They later moved to New York City,
were Bess worked at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Eventually they moved to
West, New York, where she worked as a realtor. She and her husband
also purchased and managed the Tunnel Diner in New Jersey for many
years.
In 2015, Bess returned to Pennsylvania and became a resident of
Providence Place in Drums. She celebrated her 100th birthday there on
January 7, 2026.
Throughout her life Bess was an avid reader, enjoyed painting, and was
known by friends and family as an excellent cook and baker.
Preceding Bess in death was her husband Alex; siblings, Melane Pavlick,
Dolores Attick, Robert Grovich, Melvyn (Butch) Grovich and Marion
Molinari.
Surviving are siblings, Rose Van Blargan, Florence Cohn, Dorothy Hudock,
Violet Brazzo, and Dr. Richard Grovich, and many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home,
Hazleton. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
