Gwendlynn “Gwenny” Yenchick
May 26, 2026
Gwendlynn “Gwenny” Yenchick, 82, of Hazleton, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Born and raised in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late David and Doris (Kimmel) Thrash. Gwenny attended Hazleton High School before marrying the love of her life, Gerald Yenchick, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage.
Together, Gwenny and Gerald proudly operated Yenchick Market in the Heights section of Hazleton. Later, alongside their sons, they established Heights Terrace Dry Cleaners, continuing their family’s strong work ethic and dedication to the community.
Gwenny and Gerald built a life centered on family. Their greatest joy came from spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family dinners, picnics, beach vacations, and memorable trips to Disney World were treasured traditions that brought everyone together and created lasting memories.
Affectionately known as “Nanna” by her granddaughters and “Great Nanna” by her great-grandchildren, Gwenny never missed a recital, sporting event, or milestone celebration. Each member of her family held a special place in her heart.
She was an avid Phillies fan who loved cheering on her team. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed playing cards and watching Hallmark Channel Christmas movies.
A woman of deep and devoted faith, Gwenny was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Hazleton.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald, in 2022.
Surviving are her loving children: Gerald Yenchick Jr. and wife Penny; Daniel Yenchick and wife Maria; Debra Yenchick and wife Lisa; and Sherri Sutton and husband Robert. Also surviving are her cherished grandchildren, Katherine Speedwell and husband Carlos, and Sarah Gaughan and husband Derek; along with her treasured great-grandchildren, Dominic, Miles, Carter, Kamille, Lillian, and Luca. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Fisher, and brother, David Thrash.
A Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. by Rev. Eugene Hradil at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton. Interment will be private in St. Mary’s Byzantine Cemetery, Hazleton.
Friends and relatives are invited to call Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home, 532 N. Vine St., Hazleton.
