Jane Altmiller McLean was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on August 11, 1937 to her beloved parents, Charles and Althea Altmiller.
Known affectionately as "Jane the Brain," she was the valedictorian of Hazleton High School's Class of 1954. Her brilliance earned her a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she majored in Psychology. In her first year, she was elected into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honor society and went on to graduate with a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany.
In 1960, she married her best friend and true love, Dr. Robert (Bob) McLean. As an Army surgeon's wife, Jane traveled the world with Bob, living in various countries and hosting dignitaries with poise. Her linguistic talents were remarkable; she was fluent in Korean and proficient in five other languages. Notably, she served as an interpreter in Russian and German during the early U.S. Space Program in San Antonio, Texas. She even attended President John F. Kennedy's speech the day before his assassination. Later, while living in Huntsville, Alabama, she created a mobile lending library for the newly opened Fox Army Hospital, a testament to her giving spirit.
Jane had a passion for life and pursued her interests with great dedication. She was a dog trainer, and her cherished Gordon Setter, Laddie, won a show in Texas. After settling in Alexandria, Virginia, she became a Master Gardener and founded the Mount Vernon Master Gardener Clinic. This organization continues to serve the community today under the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Jane will be remembered for her calming spirit, unwavering determination, and quiet confidence. She was truly the sunshine in Bob's life, and their 65-year marriage was a testament to their enduring love.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert (Bob) McLean, of Alexandria, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her brother, John (Jack) Altmiller, and her sister, Linda Altmiller Smith.
