Janet Planutis 80, a resident of Kelayres, passed away Thursday evening at Lehigh
Valley Hospital, Hazleton Campus with her loving family at her side.
Born and raised in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late David and Anna
(Voloshin) Reinmiller. She moved to Kelayres in 2023.
Janet was a 1960 graduate of Hazleton High School. Upon completing school she was
employed as a waitress at George’s Restaurant, West Hazleton. It was there that she
met the love of her life, Joe Planutis, and the love affair continued until his death in
2003.
Jane went on to begin a 27-year career at Hazleton General Hospital in the dietary
Department. She was a union officer for the AFSCME. She was well known in the
union to negotiate for the rights of her fellow employees.
Most important to Janet was being a loving wife, mother and “Grammy”. She was a
fierce advocate of those with special needs, having raised a daughter with physical
limitations. Janet worked tirelessly throughout her life to fight for all those she loved.
She was a member of the former Holy Trinity German Catholic Church, Hazleton, and
the Parents Guild for Easter Seals.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Planutis
in 2003, daughter Diane Planutis on Match 15, 2024, an infant son Michael, and two
brothers, David and Charlie Reinmiller.
Janet leaves behind her son and caregiver Joseph Planutis, Kelayres, daughter
Barbara Malloy and husband Michael, Beaver Meadows, and loving grandchildren,
Sara, Julia and Joseph Planutis, and also a sister, Barbara Potucek, Harleysville and
several nieces and nephews.
