Joseph Planutis Obituary

Joseph D. Planutis, 53, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Janet M. (Reinmiller) Planutis. A lifelong area resident, Joe was a 1991 graduate of Hazleton High School.

Joe grew up in a loving and nurturing home, where he learned the importance of caring for others. He lovingly devoted many years to caring for his mother and sister prior to their passing. Most recently, Joe was employed as a custodian with the Hazleton Area School District. He took great pride in his work and was affectionately known as “Mr. Joe” by the children. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie of his coworkers—particularly the cafeteria staff, who always made sure he was well fed.

A natural conversationalist, Joe had a gift for turning strangers into friends. He was known as the family historian—the keeper of memories and stories that bound generations together.

Joe was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Yankees. He found joy and peace in the outdoors, often biking, hiking, or relaxing at his favorite spot, “the number 8,” where he loved to sit and take in the water views.

He had a deep love for animals, especially cats, caring not only for his own but also for the neighborhood strays who quickly became part of his extended family.

Above all, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and the unconditional love he shared as a devoted son, father, and brother.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Janet Planutis; his sister, Diane Planutis; and infant brother, Michael.

Surviving are his cherished children, Julia M. Planutis and Joseph J. Planutis, both of Nesquehoning; his devoted sister, Barbara Malloy, and her husband, Michael, of Beaver Meadows; niece, Sara E. Planutis, of Beaver Meadows; aunt, Barbara Potucek, of Harleysville; as well as many cousins and countless friends whose lives he touched.

A prayer service will be held Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home, 532 N. Vine Street, Hazleton, with Rev. Kevin Miller presiding. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon until the time of service.
