Mary T. Mulligan of Metuchen, NJ died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday,
September 17, 2023 at Brighton Gardens of Edison under the care of Haven Hospice.
Mary was born in Hazleton to Austin and Mary Conahan McHale. She graduated from St. Gabriel’s
High School in Hazleton, received her RN degree from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in
Wilkes Barre, PA and began her career as an OR nurse working in White Plains, NY.
Early in her career Mary was a proud member of the U.S. Navy Cadet Nurse Corps. Mary was
married in November 1950 to Daniel A. Mulligan at Saint Gabriel’s RC Church in Hazleton. They
settled in Flushing, NY and later moved to Highland Park, NJ to raise their family where she was an
active parishioner of St Paul’s RC Church.
When her boys were older Mary returned to work in the Medical Records Department at Middlesex
General Hospital and advanced to hold the position of Quality Assurance Coordinator for the Medical
Staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital until her retirement. She later relocated to
Metuchen and became a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral where she served on the
Adoration Society Team and taught CCD. Mary volunteered for the next 20 years with
the Auxiliary of JFK Medical Center ending her tenure as a member of the JFK Auxiliary Board.
Seventeen of those years were spent doing work that she loved at the JFK Medical Center’s Haven
Hospice Program.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Daniel A. Mulligan (1987); her son, First Lieutenant Daniel
A. Mulligan USAF (1976); brothers Austin M. McHale (2007) and Robert M. McHale (2023) and a
sister, Helen Louise McHale, RSM (2017).
She is survived by her sister Katherine McHale Bommer of York, PA. Mary leaves behind her
loving son Tim & his wife Lorraine Mulligan of Metuchen, NJ, and their children: Amanda & her
husband Jeff Rushnak of Cranford, NJ; Caitlin Mulligan & her husband Daniel Mirau, MD of Media,
PA; Bryan Mulligan & his wife Cristina of Cranford, NJ and Moira Mulligan & her fiancé Scott Griffin of
Matawan, NJ. GG will be missed by her eight great-grandchildren: Ava, Quinn & Luke Rushnak;
Theodore, Graham, Everett & Felix Mirau and Mac Mulligan as well as by many dear nieces and
nephews.

Funeral services for Mary (Mae) Mulligan who passed away September 17, will be held Thursday October 19th.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM at Annunciation Parish, Church of St. Gabriel. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church prior to the mass from 9 AM to 10 AM. Burial will follow the mass at St. Gabriel Cemetery.
