Michael Scatton Obituary

December 18, 2023

Michael (Mickey) Scatton, 92 of Hazleton passed away unexpectedly early Monday afternoon at the Manor at St. Luke Village.

Born and raised in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Perkosky) Scatton.  As an only child he was the shining star of his mom’s life and Mickey was always a loving and caring son.

He was a graduate of Hazleton High School and attended Penn State University.  Mickey’s career in the food industry began in his family’s business, Scatton’s Restaurant, on Mine St.  They relocated to Laurel St. and his family were all active employees of the business.  After the closing of the Laurel St. Location, Mickey founded Scatton’s Restaurant on 22nd St.  Scatton’s was a premier restaurant in the area, with fine dining and known for its delicious seafood and Italian dishes.  Mickey not only enjoyed creating delicious food, he also enjoyed working the front of the restaurant where he greeted and socialized with his loyal patrons.

After Mickey sold the restaurant, he began a new chapter in the food industry.  He founded Scatton’s Seafood, a storefront business on Chestnut St.  where he was known as the “Seafood King” to his local customers and to those he shipped to.  He retailed locally and wholesaled seafood throughout the state.  He then  moved to a new store on Wyoming St.  Even though he loved his work, at the age of 83 he retired to spend more time with who he loved most, his wife and family.

He celebrated 70 wonderful years of marriage with his wife Eleanor.  They enjoyed a simple life of family dinners, listening to Frank Sinatra enjoying summers in their back yard and most importantly playing with their grandchildren.  Every day Mickey was at Giant getting more treats of ice cream and snacks to enjoy with his grandchildren. The children’s laughter, no matter how loud, always put a smile on his face.  His home was filled with joy when he was surrounded by their love.

He was a member of the Valley Country Club and in addition to golf, he enjoyed playing cards in the 19th hole with his old friends.  He was also a former member of the Swing Club and Key Club.

He was devout in his faith and was a member of St. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Church of St. Joseph

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Eleanor on January 31, 2023.

Mickey leaves behind his loving and devoted children, Michelle Lee of Kelayres, Pamela Shemansky and husband James, Hazleton, Frank Scatton and wife Madonna, Mountaintop.

Also his treasured grandchildren whom he was affectionately know as Poppy, James Lee, III, Michael Lee and wife Jessica, Rachelle Mallets and husband Matthew, Kelly Marchetti and husband Randy, Bryan Shemansky and partner Nicole Dilulio, Kristina McCole and husband Bernard and Michael Scatton and wife Kelly, and cherished great grandchildren, Gracelyn, Isabella and Michael Lee,  Myla, Analee and Kylie Mallets, Ali and Cameron Marchetti, Bernard and Mason McCole and Frank Scatton and numerous nieces and nephews and too many friends to mention.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 AM at St. Cyril and Methodius, Parish of St. Joseph.  Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

Friends may call Friday morning from 9 AM to 10 AM at the church prior to the Mass.
