Therese Zogby Obituary

Therese D. Zogby, of Hazleton, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday morning, October 17th, 2023. The
daughter of the late Joseph A. and Sadie M. Zogby, Therese was a graduate of St. Gabriel High School
and Chestnut Hill College. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Marywood College
School of Social Work, where she received her masters degree. A licensed clinical social worker,
Therese began her sixty-plus years long association with Catholic Social Services of Hazleton in 1951.
She served the agency for as many years as a direct counselor, and finished her career as a
Director/Supervisor of the Hazleton Office of Social Services. She continued to support the agency’s
mission through consultation services after her retirement, often saying that she had “the best job in
town.”
Therese felt privileged to serve the people of her community. She was truly devoted to her clients.
Her commitment to meeting the needs of those in distress, whether material or emotional was exemplary.
She poured herself out for her clients, practicing the “art” of social work, to help people understand that
they could find acceptance, caring and compassion as well as practical assistance with their difficulties.

Therese’s favorite aspect of her job was working with foster and adoptive families. She was
thrilled each time she was able to help families complete their circle of love through adoption of a child.
She was able to place hundreds of babies with loving families throughout her career. Therese had a deep
love for her hometown and was involved in the establishment of several initiatives to identify and address
emerging needs in Hazleton, including Meals on Wheels, The Buddy Program ( a precursor to the Big
Brothers/Big Sisters) and the Healthy Beginnings Program, which provides maternal health services for
resource-challenged families in our community. Therese was recognized for her service through the
Soroptimist International of the Year Award, as well as the YWCA of Hazleton Pearl Award.
For Therese, the touchstone of her life has been God and family. She was a devoted member of
St. Gabriel’s Parish, serving for many years as a member of the choir and organist. She was predeceased,
in addition to her parents, by her brothers, Dr. Albert J. Zogby (and wife Josephine Zogby), Charles A.
Zogby, and her sister Josephine T. Moran, brother-in-law Bill Moran, nieces Anna Marie Coffin and
nephews Bill Moran and Bob Bauder. She is survived by nieces Dr. Cecelia Rowland (Patrick), Rose
MacKenzie (Jack), Terry Moran Bauder, and Rachel Strassman (Jeff); nephews Joseph A. Zogby
(Margaret), James E. Zogby (Sharon), Dr. Chuck Darowish (Kathleen), Thomas L. Moran (Jane), Michael
J. Moran (Melinda), Patrick F. Moran (Kathleen). She is also survived by 34 great nieces and nephews, 38
